Tarik earned his B.A. at Cornell in Psychology and his MA in Social Welfare Management and Planning. His commitment to working with young people began with Americorps, where he worked with disengaged and low performing high school students in San Jose’s East Side Union School district. From there, he deepened his experience working with underserved youth as he managed a hands-on job training program for homeless young adults with Larkin Street Youth Services in San Francisco. He led the Education and Employment Department with First Place for Youth and managed The Achievement Award Program – a scholarship program for low income UC Berkeley undergrads. Tarik firmly believes that every young person has the right to a high quality public education.
