GLOW and BUILD Unite

As of December 9, 2015, Los Angeles-based youth development organization GLOW has merged with BUILD. This step is a natural evolution of a long-time partnership. Since GLOW’s inception in 2006, BUILD has been GLOW’s friend and affiliate partner. GLOW is incredibly proud to have served over 30,000 students with our financial literacy curriculum and college affordability programming. By merging with BUILD, our organizations will expand their impact to serve more students around Los Angeles.

What BUILD Is All About

Through entrepreneurship-based, experiential learning, BUILD ignites the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equips them for high school, college, and career success.

Partnering with 23 high schools across the nation this year, BUILD currently serves over 1,500 high school students each year in the San Francisco Bay Area, Washington, D.C., and Boston, and has expanded into New York City.

In 2017, BUILD will also launch its program in Los Angeles with 600 ninth grade students.

The Problem

Each year, more than 500,000 students drop out of high school. Countless others remain disengaged in school, leaving too many students unprepared for success in the 21st Century.

The Cost to Society: $145 Billion Lifetime cost of each year of dropouts.

The Solution

BUILD will enhance the education of students by leveraging our expertise in entrepreneurship and experiential learning to decrease drop-out rates and increase student engagement and learning, leading more students to finish high school prepared for future success.

Once we have scaled our direct-service model to over 12x its current size, BUILD will use this programmatic success as a proof point, engaging and training community partners and school districts to adopt our pedagogical approach as a permanent feature of their curricular programs, thereby reducing the drop-out rate and improving the educational engagement of one million students each year.

BUILD’s Impact

We believe that entrepreneurship is a powerful vehicle to deliver a superior experiential education.  Our impact to date supports this thesis. Since 2012:

  • 97% of students completing the BUILD program have graduated from high school.
  • 98% of those graduates have been accepted to at least one postsecondary option (86% to a four-year university).
  • 72% of BUILD graduates have enrolled in college, as compared to
  • 51% of low-income youth nationwide.
  • 93% of BUILD college freshmen have persisted past their first year of college.
