In her third year at BUILD NYC, High School of World Cultures student Genesis Vaca’s star is shining brighter than ever!
“What I most like about BUILD is that it helps me to develop myself as a young artist by creating designs, prototypes and websites. I also love that through BUILD, I got to meet my now best friends, and my fear to speak and express myself is almost gone, and this fear was really present at the beginning because giving a speech in a second language is really hard. The lesson that I will keep for the rest of my life that I got from BUILD is to have confidence and to believe in myself, because when I came to this country it wouldn’t have crossed my mind that I would be doing presentations in English or leading my team in a business program. BUILD teaches me that I can accomplish even the impossible if I believe in myself; and this is going to help me in the future since I would remember to believe in myself anytime I feel that I can’t do something.” – Genesis Vaca

Through the engaging process of launching and running a small business, BUILD students grow in confidence and gain their voice. Young people who may often shy away from speaking in front of groups, jump at the chance to present their ideas and innovations to their classmates, mentors, and professionals from the community.
