The Power of Student Voice: How BUILD’s New Design Challenge Empowers All Students In Under-resourced Communities

Redwood City, CA – BUILD.org is pleased to announce the launch of the new and improved Design Challenge, co-designed with the generous support of Comcast NBCUniversal. In the realm of education, the student voice is an incredibly powerful force that can drive meaningful change and transform the learning experience for all. When students actively participate in the co-designing of curricula, it empowers them to take ownership of their education, and become more confident, and fosters a more inclusive and relevant learning environment.

“We believe that students are the real experts in understanding their needs and challenges. By co-designing the 2023 Design Challenge with them, we aimed to create something truly powerful and impactful for all students,” said Marisol Adriana Burgueno, Sr. Manager of Digital Product & Innovation at BUILD.org.

BUILD worked closely with educators and students in a series of workshops and brainstorming sessions  to inform the changes in the BUILD Design Challenge to become more inclusive of educator and student needs. These workshops and sessions aimed to inform the redesigning of the BUILD Design Challenge to become more inclusive of educator and student needs. The educators provided insights into the academic aspects and learning objectives, while the high school students offered their unique understanding of the challenges they face daily.

The result was a dynamic, student-centered curriculum that integrated real-life problem-solving, human-centered design principles, and entrepreneurship education. The 2023 Design Challenge encourages students to identify pressing issues within their communities and develop innovative solutions through entrepreneurial thinking.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the co-designed 2023 Design Challenge is its universal appeal. By incorporating the student perspective, the curriculum became more relatable and relevant to the diverse backgrounds and experiences of learners. It embraces cultural diversity, encourages empathy, and promotes a sense of global citizenship.

BUILD’s 2023 Design Challenge stands as a powerful testament to the value of student voice in curriculum co-design. By involving students in shaping their own educational experience, BUILD has crafted a transformative curriculum that empowers all learners to become change agents in their communities and the next generation of innovative and socially conscious leaders.

Educators, parents, and policymakers must embrace and celebrate the power of student voice, and acknowledge that students have valuable insights that can shape the future of education for the better.
