The BUILD Bay Area Story

The BUILD program was founded in the Bay Area in 1999, and now serves over 600 students throughout Oakland and the Peninsula, equipping them for college and life success. BUILD partners directly with schools to help students develop and run their own small businesses, ultimately delivering content that enriches students’ high school experience in profound ways and prepares them for postsecondary education as well as the rapidly changing needs of the 21st century workforce. BUILD showcases that dreaming big, working hard and persistence is in all of us.

As the flagship BUILD region, the Bay Area prides itself on piloting innovative programming. In Spring 2020, BUILD Bay Area introduced the COVID-19 Virtual Design Challenge, the first fully digital BUILD offering, as a response to school closures. This offering equips youth with the entrepreneurial skills and mindsets they need to design a more just and equitable world. Now being offered to students and educators across the country, BUILD anticipates reaching tens-of-thousands of students over the next three years through open-source content, with additional resources and supports in place for first-generation students of color from under-resourced communities—our core demographic.

Through our 20+ year history, BUILD Bay Area has been dedicated to creating systemic change in the educational system. As we move forward, we will continue to inspire and empower under-resourced students in the Bay Area to achieve their full potential and help build a brighter, more equitable and interconnected society.
